Brownbranch and the surrounding Taney County hills are the focal point of this modern topographic survey, which documents a landscape defined by deep Ozark hollows and numerous family cemeteries. The small settlement of Rome sits to the northeast along Beaver Cr, while the village of McClurg occupies the eastern edge of the map. Much of the western and southern terrain is managed as part of the Mark Twain National Forest, preserving the wooded character of the Walker Hills.
