About this map

Kaniksu National Forest defines the character of this high-elevation landscape in Pend Oreille County, where a series of glacial lakes and mountain peaks dominate the terrain. Historically, the area centered on resource extraction and fire surveillance, evidenced by a Lookout Tower atop South Baldy and various workings labeled simply as Mine and Prospect scattered through the drainages. The complex network of waters including Browns Lake, Kings Lake, and the Skookum lakes fed various forks of Mill Creek and Skookum Creek. The presence of several Campground sites near the water bodies reflects the transition of this forest toward recreational use by the mid-1960s. A primitive Jeep Trail provides one of the few designated routes through the interior, underscoring the era's reliance on rugged transportation to reach remote peaks like Cee Cee Ah Peak.
