The Misquah Hills dominate this portion of the Arrowhead region, providing a high-altitude backdrop to a complex system of interconnected waterways. Centered on the sprawling expanse of Brule Lake, the landscape is defined by its deep bays and numerous islands, including Fishbox Island and Brule Island. This survey, compiled from 1958 aerial photography and field-checked in 1960, documents the boundary between the Superior National Forest and Pat Bayle State Forest.

A network of lake chains, such as Winchell Lake, Davis Lake, and the series of North, Middle, and South Cone Lakes, illustrates the glacial topography of Cook County before modern development. The presence of the Brule Lake Lookout Tower and a designated Campground near Jock Mock Bay highlights the area's mid-century role as a managed wilderness and fire-monitoring outpost. Unimproved dirt tracks provide the only terrestrial access through this heavily wooded and water-rich terrain.
