Catahoula National Wildlife Refuge and the expansive Dewey W Wills State Wildlife Management Area dominate this landscape at the intersection of LaSalle, Catahoula, and Rapides Parishes. This region is a complex drainage basin defined by seasonal water movement and industrial extraction. The Catahoula Lake Diversion Canal, flanked by an extensive levee system and a spillway, regulates the flow from Catahoula Lake toward the Mississippi drainage system.

Energy extraction is deeply integrated into the wetlands here, with numerous active zones including the West Elm Ridge Oil Field, East Muddy Bayou Oil Field, and Long Slough Oil Field. These sites, marked by many a drill hole and oil well, sit alongside natural features like Mound Bayou and Duck Johns Bayou. To the south, the terrain transitions toward Saline Lake and Big Saline Bayou, while North Big Island rises as a distinct landform amid the surrounding sloughs.
