About this map

Lake Superior shorelines define the eastern edge of this Michigan landscape, where the settlements of Birch and Buckroe are situated near the mouths of coastal river systems. The area is characterized by significant topographic relief, with Garlic Mtn rising above Garlic Island and the jagged projections of Saux-Head Point and Thoneys Point. Inland, the drainage network of the Big Garlic River and Little Garlic River features notable landmarks such as Little Garlic Falls and several small water bodies including Blemhuber Lake and Saux Head Lake. Long-distance recreational infrastructure is represented by the N Country National Scenic Trail, which winds through the hills between Big Bay Rd and the coast, providing a modern layer to the older timber and mining-road networks like Gold Mine Rd and Wilson Creek Truck Trl.
