1961 Map of Busted Butte

About this map

The Nevada Test Site and Nellis Air Force Range dominate this Cold War-era landscape, reflecting a period of intense federal activity in the desert. Surveyed in cooperation with the Atomic Energy Commission, the map details the stark topography of Yucca Mountain and the prominent volcanic landform of Busted Butte. The drainage of Fortymile Wash snakes through the eastern section, cutting through Fortymile Canyon before reaching the wide expanse of Jackass Flats. Numerous triangulation stations like VABM Iron 4161 and VABM Alice 4047 mark the high points, while a network of Jeep Trails provides the only access across the basin-and-range terrain of the Calico Hills.
