The South Loup River winds through the southern portion of this Custer County landscape, defining the local drainage patterns and topography. The terrain is characterized by a series of significant canyons and elevated plains, most notably Yellow Dog Canyon in the central portion and Custer Canyon further south. These landforms, along with Ryno Table, illustrate the erosion-carved character of the Nebraska sandhills region.
