At the turn of the century, a dedicated Steamboat Route connected points like Greens Landing and Gooding Landing with the northern rail heads, emphasizing the lake’s role as both a commercial artery and an early recreational destination.

Away from the water, the landscape is defined by the dense network of the Lehigh Valley R. R. and the various branches of the N. Y. C. and H. R. R. R.. These tracks served small agricultural hamlets and stations such as Wheeler Station and Mertensia. In the uplands to the west, rural life centered on crossroads like Baptist Hill and Academy, while the steep ravines of Wilder Run and Jason Gully carved through the fertile hills of Bristol and South Bristol.
