Lake Darling dominates the northern landscape of this North Dakota quadrangle, where the waters of the Souris River are managed through an extensive system of civil engineering works. The river's winding path south of the lake is marked by structures such as Dam Number 83 and Dam Number 87, which create Pond A and Pond B to control flow through the valley. This 2011 survey captures a rural environment defined by these water management projects and the confluence of significant drainage systems, including the Des Lacs River and tributary coulees like Mackobee Coulee.
