Humboldt National Forest encompasses much of this high-elevation landscape, where the Duck Creek Range and Schell Creek Range meet. The geography is defined by a series of steep canyons and water-dependent landmarks, most notably the Cave Cr Reservoir situated north of Square Top. To the west, the Steptoe Valley provides a broad alluvial floor before the terrain rises sharply toward The Narrows.
