The Ohio River and Big Sandy River define the industrial and transit character of this tri-state border region during the early 20th century. At the heart of the landscape sits Kenova, a critical rail junction where the Norfolk and Western, Chesapeake and Ohio RR, and B and O RR converge near the West Virginia and Kentucky state line. This transportation hub supported the growth of neighboring Ceredo and North Kenova, facilitating the movement of coal and timber from the interior hills.
