About this map

The High Plains of the Nebraska Panhandle meet at the intersection of Dawes Co Sheridan Co in the mid-1960s. This survey, part of the development program for the Missouri River Basin, reveals a landscape defined by ranching and rural education, where three separate country schoolhouses — Pleasant Home Sch, Pleasant Valley Sch, and Antelope Sch — served the scattered homesteads of the Antelope and Hay Springs regions. The northeastern corner is bisected by the Chicago and North Western railroad line, which follows the drainage of Bordeaux Creek. The topographical contrast between the rugged breaks of East Chadron and the more level agricultural plains to the south highlights the diverse terrain of the Pine Ridge country before modern consolidation changed the footprint of these local landmarks.
