Mathews River winds through the western portion of this interior Alaska wilderness, south of the Brooks Range. The landscape is defined by the significant elevation gradients of the Yukon-Koyukuk region, where drainage systems like Big Spruce Creek and its tributary Big Spruce Creek carve through the high terrain. This 2017 survey reflects the remote character of the Chandalar C-5 NW quadrangle, an area largely devoid of roads or settlements, where the primary geographical markers are the watercourses and the township and range boundaries of the Public Land Survey System. Researchers studying the hydrology of the northern interior can trace the precise flow of these glacial or snowmelt-fed streams as they appeared in the early 21st century.
