Gates Of The Arctic National Park encompasses the vast majority of this 2016 survey, representing a landscape of high-altitude drainages and dramatic peaks in the North Slope region. The drainage patterns are defined by the Ayiyak River and the Kiruktagiak River, which flow northward through deep valleys separated by prominent massifs. These waterways are fed by numerous high-country tributaries including Chert Cr and Fortress Cr. In the northwest corner, May Lake sits at the edge of the mountains before the terrain begins its gradual descent toward the Arctic coastal plain.
