Mc Donald Lake and the towering peaks of the Lewis and Livingston ranges define this terrain during the early twentieth-century surveys by Francois E. Matthes and R.H.Sargent. The landscape is a complex network of glacial features and high-altitude passes, including the dramatic ridgeline of The Garden Wall and active ice fields like Grinnell Glacier and Sperry Glacier. To the east, the Blackfeet Indian Reservation meets the mountainous interior along a line running through Chief Mt.

Human activity is sparse but notable, concentrated in isolated outposts such as Kipps Cabin, Rogers Ranch, and early lakeside settlements at Geduhns and Apgars. These early labels capture a period before the establishment of heavy tourism infrastructure, showing the primitive trail systems crossing Swiftcurrent Pass and Gunsight Pass that once served as the primary routes through this section of the Continental Divide.
