The Flathead National Forest defines the character of this mountain landscape, which is dominated by the steep western slopes of the Mission Range. Running through the valley floor, the Swan River serves as the primary drainage for numerous mountain streams, including Pa-pah Cr and Napa Cr. The settlement pattern is characterized by scattered clearings and meadowlands, such as State Meadows and Graves Meadows, which provide breaks in the dense forest cover.
