Cloudcroft sits high in the Sacramento Mountains, serving as a focal point for this survey of the Lincoln National Forest. The landscape is defined by a dense network of canyons, including James Canyon and Apache Canyon, which dictate the winding paths of US Hwy 82 and the Cox Canyon Hwy. A significant piece of regional engineering history is preserved at the Mexican Canyon Railroad Trestle Historic Site, a remnant of the mountain's timber and tourism era.
