Custer National Forest encompasses much of this landscape in southeastern Montana, where a complex network of ephemeral drainages and springs defines the land use. The presence of numerous small-scale water management features, such as Coleman Reservoir, Detborn Reservoir, Hanic Reservoir, and Gaskill Reservoir, points to the region's reliance on captured runoff for ranching and livestock. These man-made impoundments are strategically placed within a terrain of named coulees and draws, including Coleman Draw, Detborn Draw, and Stafford Draw. Notable landmarks like Red Top Hill and Schoolhouse Draw provide specific points of reference in an area otherwise characterized by its remote, unpopulated character. The arterial US Hwy 212 serves as the primary corridor through this section of Powder River County, crossing Home Cr as it traverses the public forest lands.
