Custer National Forest encompasses much of this southeastern Montana landscape, where a sophisticated network of water management features reveals the region's ranching and agricultural priorities. Numerous impoundments like Gaskill Reservoir, Hanic Reservoir, and the aptly named Necessity Reservoir are scattered across the terrain to catch runoff from drainage systems like Home Creek and Daily Creek. These water sources are vital in a landscape defined by significant elevation changes between the draws and the high ground of Red Top Hill, King Mountain, and Yager Butte.
