Columbus serves as the primary hub of this Burke County landscape, situated just south of the international boundary with the United States of America. The area is defined by a series of agricultural settlements along the northern prairie, including Larson and Kincaid, connected by a grid of rural roads such as 102nd St NW. The drainage of the West Branch Short Creek and its various forks, including the East Branch Short Creek, meanders through the township sections, creating a network of small wetlands typical of the region.

Local history and genealogy are anchored by numerous denominational burial grounds, such as Saint Johns Lutheran Cem, Saint Michaels Catholic Cem, and First Trinity Lutheran Cem. These sites, along with the Pleasant Prairie Cem and Saint Olaf Cem, mark the enduring footprint of early twentieth-century parish communities. Modern infrastructure is represented by the Columbus Municipal Airport, located just west of the main townsite.
