The Great Northern railroad cuts a diagonal line across this North Dakota landscape, connecting the small settlements of Kenaston and Baden before continuing southeast. Much of the northeast corner is defined by the Des Lacs Migratory Bird Refuge, where Des Lacs Lake and Lower Des Lacs Lake are held by dams. The terrain here transitions from the level plains of Spencer and Lowland townships into the sharp draws of Baden Coulee and Mott Coulee.

A dense network of early rural education is visible across the townships, featuring School No 2, School No 4, School No 3, Lowland Sch, and Crowfoot Sch. These schools, placed at regular intervals, illustrate the mid-century settlement pattern of Ward and Mountrail counties before the consolidation of rural districts. The map also identifies the community of Coulee at the southern edge, situated near the head of its namesake coulee.
