Cozad serves as the primary hub of this Dawson County landscape, situated just north of the wide, braided channels of the Platte River. The town's grid is well-established, anchored by Main St and 8th St, and supported by the Cozad Municipal Airport. To the east lies the smaller settlement of Darr, positioned where the rail and highway corridors parallel the river's course.

This agricultural region is defined by an intricate network of irrigation infrastructure designed to manage the Platte's waters. Large-scale works including the Dawson County Canal, Thirtymile Canal, and Orchard Alfalfa Canal crisscross the plains, while the Dawson County Diversion Reservoir and Cozad Lake provide significant water storage. In the south, the terrain shifts abruptly from flat farmland to the more complex topography of Gallagher Canyon, where Wichelt Reservoir and Velte Reservoir are tucked into the breaks.
