The town of Akeley and the nearby settlement of Chamberlain anchor this 2019 survey of the lake-studded landscape of Hubbard and Cass Counties. The northern reaches are dominated by the Chippewa National Forest, where the Shingobee River flows through a dense network of glacial water bodies including Steel Lake, Mary Lake, and the expansive Howard Lake. This area is characterized by its high concentration of wetlands and smaller named basins such as Doe Lake and Spring Lake, reflecting the classic post-glacial topography of northern Minnesota.
