Cypress Lake dominates this Central Florida landscape along the border of Osceola and Polk Counties. The area is characterized by its extensive network of water management infrastructure, including the South Port Canal, Hatchineha Canal, and Short Canal, which regulate the flow between major water bodies like Lake Hatchineha. These man-made channels cut through a terrain of low-lying wetlands and natural drainages like Reedy Creek. Scattered throughout the marshy environment are several hammocks—elevated stands of trees that provided dry ground in an otherwise saturated landscape. These locations, such as Ike Hammock, Carson Hammock, and Sheep Hammock, represent traditional landmarks in the Kissimmee River basin. The map illustrates a transitional period where agricultural and ranching lands meet the preserved aquatic environments of the Florida interior.
