The Mississippi River winds through the heart of this northern Minnesota landscape, where the waters of White Oak Lake and Little White Oak Lake meet the river's meandering course. Much of the southern and central terrain is defined by the Chippewa National Forest, creating a mosaic of wetlands and timberland surrounding the city of Deer River and the neighboring village of Zemple.
