Deer River and the small incorporated village of Zemple serve as the primary human centers in this northern Minnesota landscape, where the Mississippi River meanders toward its confluence with the Deer River. Much of the territory is defined by the wetlands and timber of the Chippewa National Forest, including the broad expanse of White Oak Lake and its smaller neighbor, Little White Oak Lake.
