Big Thicket National Preserve dominates the eastern half of this landscape, protecting a dense network of wetlands and creek bottoms north of Fresenius. The map illustrates the complex hydrology of Hardin County, where stagnant swampy areas known as baygalls, such as Jack Gore Baygall and Deserter Baygall, define the local geography. These features, along with Deserter Island, suggest a history of isolation and difficult passage through the piney woods and bottomland hardwoods.
