The dense woodlands of southeast Texas define this region, characterized by the unique wetland environments of Deserter Baygall and Jack Gore Baygall. Much of the eastern portion of the landscape is protected within the Big Thicket National Preserve, where the Neches River bottomlands include features like Deserter Island and Gore Lake. Small settlements and family-named landmarks are scattered throughout the pines, including Caney Head to the north and Fresenius in the southwest.
