The Norfolk and Western railway corridor bisects this landscape of southeastern Virginia, passing through Disputanta and Centerville as it moves toward the southeast. The terrain is defined by an extensive network of wetlands and watercourses, most notably Blackwater Swamp and the headwaters of the Blackwater River. These drainages create a complex pattern of timbered lowlands and ridges that dictated the placement of small rural communities and local industry.
