The Sacramento Mountains define the high-elevation landscape of this Otero County region, where the deep drainage of Nogal Canyon and Domingo Canyon carve through the rugged eastern slopes. Much of the area is protected within the Lincoln National Forest, a territory where water sources were critical for early transit and livestock. Strategic springs and reservoirs, such as Cirhuelas Springs, Domingo Spring, and Burch Tank, are dispersed throughout the high country.
