The drainage network of the Big Open region of eastern Montana is the primary feature of this landscape, where the waters of Redwater Cr and its many tributaries carve through the rolling plains of Richland County. This 2017 survey reveals an area defined by its reliance on water management in an arid environment, notably marked by the Fatzinger Reservoir and Candee Pond. The land is neatly partitioned by the Public Land Survey System, with the intersections of t26n r51e and surrounding townships providing the structural grid for the sparse road network. A few essential county routes, including Co RD 143 and Co RD 480, provide the only major access points across the watershed. Collectors and researchers can trace the course of several prominent waterways, such as Long Grass Cr, Bilger Cr, and Duplisse Cr, which dictate the topography and historical land use of this section of the High Plains.
