About this map

The rugged coal-mining borderlands of the Cumberland Mountains define this 1953 landscape, where the Kentucky and Tennessee state line weaves through steep ridges and deep hollows. The industrial character of the region is evident in the numerous Strip Mines and Strip Mine operations scattered across the slopes of Cooper Ridge and King Mountain. The Southern and L & N railroads serve as the primary lifelines for the valley settlements, connecting the mining outposts of Eagan (Dilley Sta), Clairfield, and Pruden along the winding course of the Clear Fork.
