The high alpine interior of the Eagle Cap Wilderness is defined by a cluster of prominent peaks and glacial lake basins. Sacajawea Peak and the Matterhorn dominate the northern terrain, separated from the rest of the range by the dramatic Hurwal Divide. This landscape is shaped by the headwaters of several major drainages, including the Lostine River, Hurricane Creek, and the East Fork Wallowa River, which flow from high-elevation sources such as Ice Lake and Glacier Lake.

Transit through this protected area of the Wallowa National Forest is restricted to a network of high-mountain passes and trails. Routes like Hawkins Pass, Horton Pass, and Glacier Pass connect isolated basins, providing the only access through the divide between Wallowa and Union Counties. The map details a dense concentration of water bodies in the Lake Basin, where Mirror Lake, Moccasin Lake, and Douglas Lake are concentrated near the foot of Eagle Cap.
