Cowlitz River meanders through the northern reaches of this landscape, supporting industrial and agricultural activity in Lewis County. The Cowlitz Trout Hatchery stands near the small settlement of Alexander, while the surrounding terrain is defined by the open spaces of Cowlitz Prairie and Layton Prairie. These flatlands contrast sharply with the timbered ridges to the south, where numerous quarries and the Windom Mine suggest a history of resource extraction.
