The Cape Fear River winds across the southwestern corner of this coastal plain landscape, providing a natural anchor for the historic seat of Elizabethtown. Moving north and east, the terrain is defined by a dense network of Carolina bays—elliptical depressions that create a unique wetland mosaic. Notable among these are Jones Lake and the recreational waters of White Lake, which are surrounded by numerous named bays such as Olin Tatum Millpond Bay and Sessoms Bay.
