The Clover Mountains dominate this high-desert landscape in Lincoln County, where the elevation rises steeply toward Elly Mtn. The terrain is deeply incised by a series of drainages, including Ash Canyon, Acklin Canyon, and the appropriately named Pennsylvania Canyon. Water sources are sparse but critical in this environment, represented here by Elly Spring in the northern reaches and Carson Spring further south. These seasonal water points and the ephemeral flow of Pine Cr have historically dictated movement and land use through the high passes and flats.
