Elmdale and its surrounding prairie landscape are defined by a complex network of seasonal drainages and coulees in Richland County. This rural corner of eastern Montana is anchored by the small community and the Elmdale Cem, which provide a genealogical focal point for the region. The terrain is deeply incised by multiple branches of Charlie Creek, including W Charlie Cr and the winding Middle Charlie Cr. Significant topographic depressions such as Big Basin Coulee and Hanson Coulee illustrate the erosional patterns common to the Missouri River breaks region. A grid of section-line roads, such as Co RD 321 and Co RD 143, facilitates transit across the open range, connecting isolated farmsteads to the wider agricultural network during the early 21st century.
