The Columbia River forms the northern boundary of this high-desert terrain, where the Chicago Milwaukee St Paul and Pacific railroad tracks follow the southern bank. Between the massive elevations of Umtanum Ridge and Yakima Ridge, the landscape is defined by the sharp peak of Emerson Nipple and deep incisions like McCoy Canyon. Water sources are critical but sparse in this environment, evidenced by isolated features such as Juniper Springs, Barrel Springs, and a pair of Artesian Wells on the flats. Human presence is concentrated at the Roberts Ranch and along the river at China Bar. This 1948 survey shows a region largely defined by its natural topography and early infrastructure, straddling the line between Yakima and Benton counties.
