The Sabine River snakes through the southern portion of this region, defining the border between Rains and Van Zandt counties. This low-lying drainage basin is characterized by a complex network of wetlands and seasonal water bodies, including Little Slough, Holcomb Slough, and Yellow Steer Slough. To the north, the terrain rises slightly toward the community of Emory, where the landscape transitions into a patchwork of rural homesteads and agricultural fields connected by a dense grid of county roads.
