Isle Royale National Park dominates this remote island landscape at the southwestern tip of the archipelago. The terrain is characterized by dramatic coastal features and inland water bodies, most notably the large Feldtmann Lake tucked behind the elevated Feldtmann Ridge. This 2017 survey shows the intricate shoreline where Lake Superior meets the land at Rainbow Cove and Grace Harbor, protected by the submerged hazards of Cumberland Reef. The hydrology of the island is represented by the Big Siskiwit River, which drains the interior wetlands toward the coast. Geographic landmarks like Middle Point and The Head define the peninsula's reach into the lake, illustrating the wilderness character of Michigan's northernmost reaches where natural boundaries and topographic relief take precedence over human development.
