Fernwood sits at the confluence of the Saint Maries River and Crystal Cr in the northern portion of this 2017 survey. The landscape quickly transitions from the river valley into the timbered heights of the St. Joe National Forest, which covers a significant portion of the terrain. Peaks such as Nakarna Mtn and Carpenter Mtn define the high country, while the southern reaches are marked by the Hoodoo Mountains and the distinctive Emerald Butte.
