Figure 4 Ranch is situated in a high-plains landscape where the plateaus of North Dakota meet the drainages of the Missouri River watershed. This modern 2018 survey documents the intricate topography of the Little Missouri National Grassland across the boundary of McKenzie and Dunn counties. The area is defined by the winding paths of Bear Den Cr and Deep Cr, which carve through the land and dictate the placement of local infrastructure. A sparse network of roads, such as Bear Den Rd and Co Rte 53, connects these ranching lands. The map detail reflects the continued importance of livestock and land management in this portion of the northern plains, showing the township-and-range divisions that have structured the region's geography since the homesteading era.
