Aurora is defined by a heavy federal and military presence in the mid-1960s, anchored by the sprawling Fitzsimons Army Medical Center in the north and the nearby Lowry Air Force Base. The transition of the Colorado landscape from open prairie to suburban density is evident as residential developments and numerous schools, such as Central High Sch and Laredo Middle Sch, fill the grid between Sand Creek and the Toll Gate Creek drainage.
