The Apache Indian Res dominates this section of north-central New Mexico, where high desert plateaus meet the administrative border of Rio Arriba Co and Sandoval Co. This landscape is defined by deep drainage systems and seasonal water sources, most notably the Arroyo Valles and the water bodies at San Jose Lakes in the southeast corner. The terrain transitions from the distinct Badland Hills to the carved depths of Menfee Canyon and Medio Canyon.
