Gridley sits at the southern edge of this central Illinois landscape, where the prairie is defined by a dense grid of section roads and small drainage systems. The terrain is marked by the winding courses of Short-Point Cr, Scattering Point Cr, and Little Panther Cr, which cut through the agricultural blocks of McLean, Woodford, and Livingston counties. These watercourses provided the natural logic for early settlement patterns before the rigid township and range system dictated the modern road network seen today.
