The Little Cedar River winds south through a landscape defined by the rectangular grid of the Public Land Survey System, eventually joining the Cedar River near the town of Floyd. This area of northern Iowa exhibits a transition from upland prairie agriculture to the wooded drainage basins of the river valleys. The small settlement of Howardville serves as a central landmark for local history researchers, anchored by the Howardville Cem and located just south of the border at Mitchell Line St.
