The Little Pee Dee River and its associated wetlands define this portion of the South Carolina Coastal Plain, where a network of small agricultural settlements and family crossroads has persisted for generations. In the northern reaches, Pittman Corner and Carmichael Crossroads anchor the landscape, while further south, the Dillon Co Marion Co line cuts through the area near the community of Fork. The transition from the low-lying Maidendown Swamp to the slightly higher ground of Zion is marked by a scattering of small local landmarks, including the Zion School and several rural burial grounds.
