The Fort Knox Military Reservation dominates this landscape where the Ohio River and Salt River converge at the northern border of Hardin County. This 1960 revision documents the extensive infrastructure of the post, including Godman Army Airfield, Ireland Army Hospital, and the world-famous U S Bullion Depository. The transition from river-bottom commerce to military installation is evident in the survival of numerous family burial grounds like Geoghegan Cem and Boone Cem within the reservation boundaries. Settlement clusters at West Point and Muldraugh flank the military grounds, connected by the Illinois Central railroad. Higher elevations such as Snow Mtn and Scott Mountain overlook the sprawling training grounds, while the Tip Top Station remains a key point along the rail line during the mid-twentieth century.
