Fort Wilkins State Park anchors this coastal survey, preserving the grounds of Old Fort Wilkins between the shores of Lake Superior and Lake Fanny Hooe. The landscape is a study in the northern Michigan copper boom's physical legacy, marked by a Copper Mine (Abandoned) positioned deep in the interior south of Copper Harbor.

The rugged geography is defined by the steep elevation of East Bluff and a network of interior waters including Montreal River and Hoar Lake. To the north, the Copper Harbor Lighthouse stands at the entrance to the harbor, while the eastern reaches of the Keweenaw Peninsula extend toward Keystone Point and Bay Lake. The presence of an early Telephone Line cutting across the eastern forest tracks the slow modernization of this isolated mining and maritime frontier.
