Fortification Rocks stands as a prominent geological landmark in this high-altitude landscape of northwestern Colorado. The terrain is defined by the drainage systems of the Elkhead Mountains, where the N Fork Fortification Cr and S Fork Fortification Cr converge into the main channel of Fortification Cr. This area of Moffat County shows a transition between the northern reaches of the Fourmile Cr valley and the expansive ridge systems to the west.
